Signs Your Pet May Need Emergency Care
When in doubt, come in. It is always better to have your pet evaluated and find out everything is okay than to wait on a symptom that turns out to be serious. That said, the following signs should always be treated as a potential emergency:
- Difficulty breathing or labored breathing
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Seizures or loss of consciousness
- Collapse or inability to stand
- Trauma—such as being hit by a vehicle or suffering a serious bite wound
- Suspected ingestion of a toxin or foreign object
- Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
- Inability to urinate or straining without producing urine
- Pale, white, blue, or gray gums
- Extreme lethargy or unresponsiveness
- Suspected broken bones or severe swelling
